This Will Destroy You’s “The Mighty Rio Grande” used in Verizon ad for campaign to help first responders

Official press release:

The track “The Mighty Rio Grande” from This Will Destroy You’s self-titled full-length was used during the 2019 Super Bowl this weekend as the soundtrack for a Verizon Wireless commercial featuring Los Angeles Chargers coach Anthony Lynn visiting first responders who saved his life after an auto accident. The commercial serves as part of Verizon’s “The Team That Wouldn’t Be Here” campaign.

Writes Adage.com:

“The company’s Super Bowl ad was part of a broader effort that included a dozen spots in which eleven NFL players and one NFL coach reunite with the rescue workers who helped save their lives. The spots, collectively dubbed ‘The Team That Wouldn’t Be Here’, were directed by Peter Berg (Friday Night LightsVery Bad Things) and were first released nearly two weeks ago, with the exception of [Sunday’s] ad, which debuted during the Big Game and focused on Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn.”

Verizon will be donating up to $1.5 million to the Gary Sinise Foundation’s First Responder Outreach program, which benefits first responders and their families by building custom smart homes for responders severely injured in the line of duty. Verizon will donate $1 for every social share of the This Will Destroy You spot on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #allourthanks through February 8th.
